Our first school opened its doors to just eight students in a Victorian-style home in the Annesdale Park and Central Gardens Historic District in Midtown Memphis. First Class Montessori flourished and we now have a second location in Cordova, Tenn.
Our 1st Class Montessori staff believes that love for children and their education is the "key." Our teachers are trained in Montessori, Early Childhood and Elementary Education curriculum. Here, teachers serve as guides, monitors and observers rather than lecturers. Our classrooms are calm and peaceful and a high level of respect for the child is displayed by the teacher or "directress." Children freely move from one area to the next, respecting their work while constructing their "own" individual personalities. Accentuating an understanding of how the child interacts within the environment is a critical part of the Montessori method.

Mission
The mission of 1st Class Montessori School is to equip all students with the necessary academic tools to guarantee success for life.

Vision
It is the belief of founder and director Evelyn Thorpe-Hibbler, that all children can learn when given the opportunity. Therefore, the vision of 1st Class Montessori is to incorporate strategies for enhancing the Montessori Method of teaching, which will diminish illiteracy, ignorance and "self- doubt." These characteristics will be replaced with self assurance, independence and intelligence.

Purpose
While teaching in the city school system for many years and observing teenage children who were considered to be the "ones left behind," founder and director, Evelyn Thorpe-Hibbler, took note of her biological children who were taught the "Montessori way" and who far exceeded their grade level. She later decided to make a difference through education.

Since the opening of her own Montessori school, Thorpe-Hibbler has assimilated her love for teaching into the classroom with the idea that children develop at their own pace and that the Montessori method of teaching benefits children by fulfilling their need to be independent.

Because children have an extensive ability to learn, 1st Class Montessori prepares children for life and not just for the next academic level. First Class Montessori takes pride in the ethnic and religious diversity of our school. The staff set out to reach children and families of all backgrounds and creeds and believe all children should have the opportunity to learn about someone different from themselves. Basic etiquette along with social graces, charm and manners are taught in the classroom. The children are able to comprehend the importance of social skills and courtesy.

1st Class Montessori Philosophy
As dedicated educators, we believe that each child should be given the opportunity to engage in a safe, social and rich environment; therefore, we prepare our environment each day to fulfill the needs of every child. First Class Montessori encourages all children to read, write, play, observe, be creative and communicate with one another. Our philosophy is based on enrichment and advancement and we're concerned about the entire educational experience, which includes enjoyment, exposure, security and self-worth.

1st Class Montessori Staff
Our staff consists of African-American, White-American, Sri Lankan and Indian educators. We always welcome more diversity.
